Removals to Beijing from the UK
Beijing is inland, so your shipment arrives at a northern port and travels on by road. That extra leg is the main thing that distinguishes a Beijing move from a Shanghai one — and it is handled by our own Beijing office.
Beijing is not a port city. Sea shipments arrive at Tianjin (Xingang) and travel roughly 150 km inland by road, which adds a few days to the timeline and a real cost to the quote. Plan on nine to fifteen weeks door to door by sea, slightly longer than Shanghai for the same shipment.
Clearance and delivery are handled by the Asian Express Beijing office, which has been operating in the city for years — relevant, because Beijing's residential compounds and delivery rules reward local familiarity.

What the inland leg means for you
Two things. First, a few extra days between arrival and delivery, which is why our Beijing planning range is slightly wider than Shanghai's. Second, an inland transport cost in the quote that a coastal delivery does not carry — so if you are comparing a Beijing quote against a Shanghai one, that difference is genuine, not padding.
It also makes air freight relatively more attractive for Beijing than for a coastal city, because air shipments fly straight into the city and skip the inland leg entirely.
Delivering in Beijing
Beijing residential compounds are typically gated and managed, and management approval for a move is normal rather than exceptional — often with a notice period and a designated delivery window. Vehicle restrictions inside the Third and Fourth Ring Roads affect when a large truck can be on the road at all, so deliveries are frequently scheduled around them.
Where an expatriate compound is involved, access rules can be stricter still. Our Beijing office deals with the compound management directly and books the slot before the vehicle leaves; this is the part of the job that genuinely benefits from being local.
Winter matters here in a way it does not in Guangzhou. Beijing winters are cold and very dry. If your shipment includes a piano, solid wood furniture or anything else sensitive to humidity swings, tell us — the transition from a humid container to a heated, dry Beijing apartment is harder on timber than the sea crossing was.
What actually slows a delivery down in China
Once your shipment is cleared, the remaining problems are physical, and they are the same across Chinese cities. Our surveyors ask about all of these before quoting, because each one is a cost if it is discovered on the day.
- Compound access. Many residential developments will not admit a full-size removal vehicle. Goods transfer to a smaller shuttle at the gate — extra handling, extra labour, and a charge if it was not quoted for.
- Lift dimensions. Chinese residential lifts are frequently smaller than UK ones. A three-seat sofa or a double wardrobe that will not fit means a stair carry, and above a few floors that is a significant cost.
- Delivery time windows. Estate management commonly restricts when removals may take place, and sometimes requires notice or a deposit. We arrange this in advance where we can.
- Parking and street access. Central districts in all four cities restrict large-vehicle access at certain hours.
- Protecting common areas. Some buildings require lift and corridor protection to be fitted before a move. Our crews carry it.
Tell us the building, not just the city. Floor number, lift availability, whether the compound admits large vehicles, and any management restrictions. Five minutes of questions at survey prevents the most common source of a revised invoice on delivery day.
Questions people ask before booking
How long does shipping from the UK to Beijing take?
Nine to fifteen weeks door to door by sea, a little longer than a coastal city because of the inland leg from Tianjin. Air freight is one to two weeks and flies directly into Beijing.
Why is a Beijing quote higher than a Shanghai quote?
The inland transport from Tianjin to Beijing is a genuine additional cost, as is the extra handling it involves. For an identical shipment, expect a Beijing delivery to cost more than a Shanghai one.
Do I need permission from my compound for the delivery?
Usually yes. Managed compounds commonly require advance notice and a booked window, sometimes with a deposit against damage to common areas. Our Beijing office arranges this — tell us the compound name at survey.
Do you deliver to Tianjin as well?
Yes. Tianjin deliveries skip the inland leg entirely, which makes them faster and cheaper than Beijing for the same shipment.
